Opposite Ends: widows' narratives of contemporary late life

The life course perspective frames this study of contemporary late life. Thematic narrative analysis is employed to analyse the stories of 16 Finn­ish widows aged 79–89 years (Moving in Old Age: Transitions in Housing and Care research project) in order to explore the experiences related to growing old. The results indicate two kinds of narratives: nostalgic rem­iniscences about a happy past are typical of the retiring to solitude story, characterised by experiences of life nearing its end and of letting go; and those inclined towards the keeping up narrative are still seeking new ex­periences and playing active roles in everyday life. Abstract This chapter approaches the question of biopolitics in ancient political thought looking not at specific political techniques but at notions of the final aim of the political community. It argues that the “happiness” (eudaimonia, beatitudo) that constitutes the greatest human good in the tradition from Aristotle to Thomas Aquinas is not a “biopolitical” ideal, but rather a metabiopolitical one, consisting in a contemplative activity situated above and beyond the biological and the political. The study offers a philosophical analysis of Nicholas Wolterstorff’s theory of justice and education for justice. Crucial aspects of Wolterstorff’s theory are his understanding of justice as inherent rights and justice as inherent worth. Interrelated to this are the concepts of life-goods, well-being and the good life. Within this framework of rights grounded in worth, the notions of natural human rights and human dignity occupy a special position.
